Series: DOMINATION Line.

Blade Steel: High-Quality Austrian Bohler D2 Tool Steel OR High-Quality 440C OR a special edition steel (see specifics above)
Blade HRC: All blades are heat-treated for hardness. As a general guide for all the steels we use: D2 is treated to about HRC 58; 440C to 58 HRC for cutting performance; Damascus Steel to about 55 HRC. San Mai gets differential heat treatment because of the 2 materials. The core gets 56/58 and the outer material gets 45. It can depends on the steels, though. Carbon and Hammon is about HRC 55-57 (depends on exact steel). 420 is 54-55 HRC.
Blade Grind: Wide Hollow Grind (for better slicing) OR a Lenticular (Convex) Grind (for better edge strength) (see specifics above)
Blade Sharpness: Blunt with 1mm edge OR Sharp (see specifics above)
Blade Finish: Glossy OR Matte/Satin (see specifics above)
Blade Ricasso/Choil: These swords have a Ricasso.
Blade Fuller: These swords have a fully functional fuller (blood groove).
Blade Tapers: These swords have profile and distal tapes for improved function and balance.

Tang: True Full Tang (exposed/visible).
D-Guard Metal: AISI 304 Stainless Steel.
Knuckle-Bow: Squared D-Guard based of Historic Models with improvements made for hand protection and withstanding punishing blows.

Handle Material: Black/Silver Laminated Stabilized Wood (designed to prevent cracking over time). Some handles are cord wrapped to help improve Grip. It is easy to remove if needed.
Handle Angle/Alignment: Straight Handle. Aligned to tip and spine for more powerful chopping and stabbing.
Handle Shape: Bellied Ergonomic.
Handle Type: Full Handles
Flipping vs Trapping: Quillon is designed for both: Sword can easily and comfortably be flipped and held in a reverse grip. It also traps well.

Sword Weight: Combat Weight - Each sword weighs approx 2.3 lbs (1.04kg) per sword. Paired swords are generally within 10 grams (0.35 oz) of each other, but because they are hand made, swords can vary in weight up to approx 50 grams in either direction. Also, the steels used and blade grinds can also change the weight. This is just the AVERAGE across all the swords of this model.

Notes: These swords are hand-made. No two swords are perfectly identical. Small variations in the measurements are typical. Please read #2 under "Things you should know" and "Not Product Defects" under the warranty for more information.

Case/Sheath: EWC is providing a free nylon-lined leather 2-in1 case ($50 Retail value) with these swords. The case is offered for free and is not covered under any warranty and none are available for replacement. Do not store the blades in leather cases as it can corrode the blades over time. To prevent your blades from scratching on the metal button rivets when putting them in and pulling them out of the sheath, you should take some Gorilla or Duct tape and put it on the inside of the sheath to cover the rivet. Also when inserting and withdrawing the swords, you will want to keep them pressed to the inside of the sheath, not the outside. Designed by: Modell Design LLC for Everything Wing Chun

Goto Top and Close: Sword Specs

In June 2014 we put out a survey asking top Wing Chun Sifus what they wanted in a butterfly sword. We got over 160 detailed replies. The DOMINATION line of swords is the first of a series of swords that came from that survey. Almost every aspect of these swords came from input from Ip Man lineage Sifus (and almost all sub-linages were represented). For example:
  • Your Sifus said that they wanted more straight-handle sword options with a squared D-Guard. Done.
  • They wanted more blade length options. You now can select from 11-14 inch blades.
  • They wanted a true American full-tang (exposed tang) sword that was made from D2 or 440C. Done.
  • They wanted full-handles and a quillon for trapping and flipping. Done and done.
  • They wanted more room in the D-Guard for your fingers in the reverse grip. Done.
In addition, we made sure the squared D-Guard was based on historical models. We then widened the front and flattened it a little, so you could do push-ups on the swords (holding the handles, blade edge facing down without touching). Don't do this, it is dangerous - but that gives you a great blocking surface that also helps prevent an opponent's weapon from slipping under your guard. These D-guards are great for training bashing movements into wooden training dummies.

We've handled maybe 150 pairs of butterfly swords over the past three years. We were trying to find a name for this new line, but coming up empty. Then the first swords arrived from the forge. When we picked one up, we realized this was an awesome weapon. The sword was a 13" D2 chopper, and it could easily take an arm off an opponent. It was then we got the name "Domination" - because if you wield these weapons that is what you will do to your opponent. These swords are for those that simply want to destroy their opponent. They are combat weight and can take the full force of a blow from a crowbar (a common weapon home-intruders carry) and keep on going. The Sharp D2 Lenticular grind versions are much heftier than the hollow-grind versions, so choose accordingly.
